"My Dear Duchess, I have just been staving off my friend [George] Grove of the Crystal Palace, who has lately become Editor of Macmillan's Magazine with the argument that I never write for magazines - how can I then comply with your request in behalf of Dr. Macleod? I am sorry to refuse you anything, and sorry that I cannot oblige him, but if I did not stick fast to my one answer for all, I should be overwhelmed. I had hoped indeed I had heard that the good Duchess your mother was much better. I can feel with you, for she is one of the sweetest and most generous mothers I have ever come across . . . Hallam (thank you) went back to Marlboro but the scarlet fever breaking out there, his sister thought that after his late attack he ought not to risk catching it so we have him here . . . Yours / A.
